Native Title

The Quandamooka People are the traditional custodians of Minjerribah and more than 90% of the island is under Native Title.

Native title describes the rights and interests of Indigenous people under their traditional laws and customs. Native title is protected at a State and Commonwealth level under the Native Title (Queensland) Act 1993 and Native Title Act 1993 (Commonwealth).

On 4 July 2011, the Federal Court of Australia made two native title consent determinations recognising the Quandamooka people’s native title rights and interests over land and waters on and surrounding North Stradbroke Island, and some islands in Moreton Bay.

"I have not come here today to give anything to the Quandamooka People. These orders give them nothing. Rather, I come on behalf of all Australian People to recognise their existing rights and interests, which rights and interests have their roots in times before 1788, only some of which have survived European settlement. Those surviving rights and interests I now acknowledge" - Judge Dowsett, 4 July 2011.

Minjerribah Futures strives to support the aspirations of Quandamooka people on Quandamooka Country, and be guided by Quandamooka principles of sustainability and respect. Many of the projects support the Traditional Custodians to maximise the benefits from improved self-determination, economic opportunities and the strengthening of culture that are the legacy of Native Title.
