We are proud to support the University of Queensland to fast-track the development of a leading COVID-19 vaccine.
Advance Queensland provided $10 million in funding in March 2020 to fast-track a world-leading COVID-19 vaccine being developed here in Queensland.
Our funding will enable the University of Queensland (UQ) along with its research partners The Doherty Institute and CSIRO, to fast-track the development of the vaccine and start the process of manufacturing the vaccine.
Phase 1 clinical trials for the vaccine have now commenced, which will test the safety and efficacy of the vaccine in humans. If they are successful, a vaccine may be available in early 2021.
The UQ is one of two Australian organisations and one of only nine globally to be tasked by the Oslo-based Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to develop a vaccine against COVID-19. CEPI and one of Australia’s largest health companies CSL have contracted to manufacture the vaccine – indicating their confidence in its viability.
Innovation isn’t new in Queensland — from Smart State to Advance Queensland we’ve led the way in taking big ideas and turning them into big benefits for our community. We are now a world leader in developing a potential vaccine for COVID-19 that can bring hope to millions of people around the world.
